What's New

Cito died shortly after celebrating his 12th birthday. He was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and died a few days later. But not before taking one last walk by the river with his old friend Bavo, chasing one last cat out of his yard and mooching some steak from his humans. Rest in peace old man. You have been and always shall be near and dear my heart.

This is Cito ...

... my pride and joy. He's the first German Shepherd Dog I've ever owned (or should I say that has owned me). I fell in love with him the minute he stepped off the plane. Cito has been my introduction to the world of dog sports, he's my do everything, try anything dog. Cito is a red sable GSD and his lines go back to West German working and show dogs as well as East German working dogs.

Cito and I enjoy participating in a wide variety of activities together. He introduced me to the sport of Schutzhund and though we never went beyond a B he taught me allot about the sport. We are currently participating in obedience, tracking and agility. He has been a medallist in weight pulling through the IWPA; And has become one of my most cherished companions and friends. We also enjoy backpacking, skijoring and just going for doggie walks.

In addition to introducing me to a variety of fun activities Cito has also introduced me to one of the common health problems found in the breed. At a year of age he was diagnosed with a fragmented coronoid process (FCP) in both elbows. He is currently not in any pain and enjoys the activities he participates in. We keep a close eye on his condition and if he appears sore or stiff after participating in a particular activity we don't do that any more.

People say that dogs leave footprints on our hearts and Cito has done just that. He's been a protector, teacher, and friend. He's been there through the laughter and the celebrations, through the difficult times and those sad days too. He was more reliable than any alarm clock I've ever had and always made a point of letting me know when one of those "other" dogs was being bad. The house may seem empty right now without you here; but my heart will never be empty because you have filled it with your everlasting love. May your journey across the bridge be swift and sweet. Until we meet again ...

Paw Prints on My Heart

As I look in your trusting eyes
to say my tearful last goodbyes,
I find it hard to let you go.
You're such a part of me.

The years we shared are now a blur
since you were but a ball of fur.
I still can see you in my mind
unleashed and running free.

But now you're sick and not yourself.
I grieve to know you've lost your health.
Yet you brought boundless joy to me.
I hope somehow you know.

And as I stroke your shiny coat,
a lump grows large within my throat.
I wonder if you understand
this really is farewell.

You look at me as if to say,
"Just stay with me. Don't go away."
And so I will, my little one
as you lay down to sleep.

And though the time has come to part,
you've left your paw prints in my heart.
A heart that breaks imagining
my life when you are gone.
